General:
Perennial herb from short, knotty rhizomes, often forming clumps; stems erect, 20-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Mostly on the lower part of the stems, flat, 3-5 mm wide, the uppermost blades usually shorter than the sheaths or sometimes bladeless, with short, rounded, ear-shaped lobes; sheaths open.
Flowers:
Inflorescence appearing as if it is on the side of the stem, very compacted to much branched, relatively open and more or less obpyramidal, 2-15 cm long, the branches erect, the heads with several to ca. 200 clusters with 2-several flowers per cluster; outer perianth segments shorter than the inner, the latter about equalling the capsules, the outer somewhat keeled, short-pointed, ending in a callus tip, the inner much broader, with broader translucent margins toward the rounded tips; stamens 6; anthers lanceolate, about 1 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, plump, broadly elliptic to egg-shaped, reddish-brown, lustrous, the summits rounded, 2-2.5 mm long, about as long as the perianth segments; seeds irregular in size, shape and surface-markings, symmetrical to very asymmetrical, oblong, blunt or with short tails at the tips, the surfaces from evenly, finely net-veined to longitudinally dark-ridged or darkly net-veined, pale to dark amber.
